Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a vital community outreach tool Smith County Memorial Hospital uses to effect positive health in the community. Chef Stephen Smith, a registered and licensed dietitian, says, “We have many people who need to get food into their house. Food insecurity is present in every city in the United States, including our town. We tend to think that hunger, or food insecurity, happens in a different town or probably overseas. But it happens here, and I use Meals on Wheels to get food in the front door of peoples’ homes.”
Chef Steve carefully plans meals to provide balanced nutrition and options beyond each day’s lunch. “The portions are way too big for one person. I make the portions big because you might want to take that food and turn it into something else. You can take a protein out and turn it into something for dinner. I coach people to take that extra food and make something out of it. We feed the people. That’s what we’re trying to do.”
Smith County Memorial Hospital uses Meals on Wheels to impact local health. We use the program to feed people with physical or financial needs and to promote health and wellness. Our head chef is a registered dietitian. Chef Steve Smith creates balanced meals that are also delicious, and he leads a food services team passionate about feeding people in the Smith Center, Kansas community. Together we transform rural health care.
