New Non-Invasive Technology Makes Jaundice Screening Easier for Newborns and Parents

Nurses Stephanie Singh, Nicole Kirnie, and Whitney Winder demonstrated how easy and quick it is to use the Dräger jaundice meter with newborn Samuel, who passed his screening.

The amazing device shown in action eliminates the need for newborn babies like Samuel to undergo painful needle pricks for initial jaundice screening, and parents no longer have to wait for lab results. Our new non-invasive transcutaneous bilirubinometer measures the yellowness of subcutaneous tissue in infants, making jaundice screening faster and less stressful for both babies and parents.

The technology is now available at Smith County Memorial Hospital thanks to grant funding from the Smith County Community Foundation, the Kansas Health Foundation of Smith County, and the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.
